Clip & Dip Grooming and Boarding
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of pets do you groom?
At Clip & Dip we groom most all breeds of dogs. If you have an extremely large dog, such as a Newfoundland or a St. Bernard, give us a call and we can discuss whether we can handle it or not. Sorry, we don't groom cats.
Do you tranquilize pets before you groom them?
We do not tranquilize any of the dogs that we groom. We understand how to handle and calm a nervous pet and treat them all with tender loving care. In the event that a dog is too aggressive or nervous for us to work on, we may ask that you get a mild sedative from your Rochester vet.
How often should I have my dog groomed?

While the frequency of grooming varies from one breed to the next, we normally recommend your dog come to see us every 4 to 6 weeks. This will ensure that your dog won't become severly matted, enabling us to give you more grooming options. In addition, even though your dog may not need to be groomed, don't forget to bring him in for regular bathing. Nobody likes to give a dog a friendly stroke only to find that their hands now smell like dirty dog.

What types of breeds do you recommend for families?
This is a very popular question and one that can have several answers. The breed that you choose depends a lot on your lifestyle and what you want to do with the dog. With that said we are going to give you some recommendations based on our experience in the grooming and boarding business. If you are looking for a smaller dog we certainly feel you would do well with a Bichon, Dachshund, Poodle, Shih Tzu, or Westy. If a larger dog is more to your liking you can't go wrong with a Lab, a Golden Retriever, or one of my personal favorites, a Golden Doodle. This is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. They are super friendly and get this, they don't shed! If you are looking for more specific information on a variety of breeds make sure you check out our Grooming page where we have links to many other articles.
My dog has a lump on it, what should I do?
We definitely recommend that any lumps be checked out by your vet. While many of these are harmless fatty tumors, some can be very dangerous. Just last week we took our 10 year old lab in to have a tumor removed that turned out to be cancerous. The safe bet is, when you have a concern call your Rochester, MN vet!
How often do you let the dogs out?
Because we run our business out off our home we are able to give your dog much more attention than what might otherwise be the case. Typically we let the dogs outside 4 to 5 times per day. Our schedule is usually first let out around 6 or 7 am, second let out around 10 or 11 am, third let out about 3 pm, fourth let out around 6 pm, and final let out at 9 pm. As you can see, the kennel keeps us very busy.
Will my dog be running with other dogs?
We will let your dog have playtime with other dogs as long as we do not observe any aggressive behavior. We want to give all the dogs every opportunity to enjoy their stay here while maintaining a safe environment for all. We also only mix the same sized dogs, and dogs with the same temperment. Meaning we will not put big dogs in with little ones, and we won't put puppies in with the old foggies. The owner of the pet will assume all risk and liability if they want their dog to run with others.
Can we have both dogs in the same kennel?
Absolutely, in fact we recommend that owners keep their pets together whenever possible. Having a familiar face around sure does reduce some of the anxiety that they sometimes feel.
Do you do Doggy Daycare?
I'm sorry to say that at this time we do not. Between our grooming and boarding business we just don't have the time required to handle such a project. But who knows, we tend to make a lot of changes around here, so maybe you'll see a daycare page pop up on our site one of these days.
If you have a specific question that is not answered on our website feel free to give us a call during normal business hours.
